A PE class is usually about running and all kinds of ball games. But students in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region get something new—equestrian lessons—or how to ride a horse.
This term, more than 2,000 students aged 11 to 17 in Hohhot are taking equestrian lessons in their PE classes. They finished the first stage of learning in the first two months. The local equestrian association (协会) gave them the horse-riding lessons.
On October 10th, more than 30 eighth-graders from Hohhot Mongolian School took their first class. They learned how to get on, get off and get along with horses.
“Teachers told us not to pat (拍) the back side of horses. Otherwise, the horses will be afraid and then kick me,” said Liu Mengran, 13. As a girl, Liu was a little afraid of the tall horses. But after learning that horses are docile (温顺的), she tried to pat a horse. “The horse stayed there quietly. It didn't hurt me. I felt close to it,” Liu said. She also learned some rules to treat horses, like not beating or shouting at them.
The students are glad to master the traditional skill. Hu He, 13, always wanted to learn horse riding. But because he lives in the city and is busy with study, he hasn't got any chances. “People often asked me if I could ride a horse,” Hu said. “Now I can proudly say ‘Yes’.”
The equestrian class reopened in March of 2018. The plan was to have 10,000 students take part in it, according to the local equestrian association.
