Moving from "scores first" to "health first", China is making its education healthier and more sustainable(可持续的).
This spring, schools across the country have put the idea of "health first" into action. In Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, the Nanchang Normal University's primary school built playgrounds on the roof. Students can jump rope, play ball and enjoy climbing activities during breaks. "We used to only walk in hallways," said Li Yutong, a 4th grader. In Beijing, all primary and middle schools started class sports activities, with plans to hold 400,000 matches this year.
Letting students get enough rest is also important. A middle school in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, has stopped morning reading. Students no longer need to arrive before 7:50 a.m., which gives them more time to sleep and have breakfast.
Another big issue is myopia(近视). Shandong Province has been chosen as a model for preventing this problem. In the last three years, myopia rates(近视率) there have dropped by 4.27%. Xing Shunfeng, a local education official, explained, "We now judge local leaders based on just two things: how healthy the students are and how well they can see."
These actions are part of the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development. In March, Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education, stressed two key goals: to ensure that students have "sweaty bodies and sparkling eyes". "We need to create PE classes that students enjoy and that make them sweat," Huai stated. He also announced the start of a new round of student mental health programmes, which will use sports, arts, labour, outdoor activities, and reading to improve their well-being.
