Zikawei Library
Zikawei Library (徐家汇书院) is located in the core of the Xujiahui Origin Scenic Area, Shanghai. “Zikawei” is the Wade-Giles romanisation (威妥玛式拼音法) of “Xujiahui” based on the Shanghainese pronunciation. The library hosts cultural and tourism functions. It was designed to be an open and welcoming place in order to build a strong connection within the community and attract people who love reading, as well as those who want to explore the city.
Features
Zikawei Library is a large and modern public library with a total floor area of 18,650 square metres. Its design is both distinctive (独特的) and meaningful, representing a mix of East and West, as well as the past and the present. The library features a unique Guangqi Gate inside its main hall, which was inspired by the Tushanwan Archway (土山湾牌楼) and created through 3D printing technology. As a library, it also contains its own iconic feature, a 20-metre-long reading table. It is the longest reading table in Shanghai.
Functions
The library has two underground floors and three above-ground floors. It provides nearly 800 reading seats for readers. Inside the library, you can find over 200,000 books and more than 600 kinds of newspapers and magazines, along with rich digital resources. Zikawei Library is not just a place for reading books. It is a new cultural and tourism space. It combines different functions such as reading, technology, museum services, art and tourism.
Opening hours
The library is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 to 21:00. Please note that the last entry is at 20:30. The library is closed on Mondays. The first-floor Children’s Area and the third floor close earlier, at 17:00.
