Exploring different parts of the world can be exciting, but it can also be challenging and lead to culture shock and feelings of stress.
When I moved to Tuscany, Italy, right after my college, I was fascinated by the beautiful views. Who wouldn’t be? The high mountains, historical buildings and delicious food made every minute of the long flight journey worthwhile. I was excited about my new beginning. But then, I started to notice little things.
As an American, I am used to a bit of personal space. Where I’m from, bumping（碰撞）up against or standing very close is considered impolite. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth in Italy.
Not knowing the language was also challenging. Sometimes, I would feel helpless. This, though, is where one part of Italian culture came in handy. Italians like to speak with their hands—a habit I’ve carried over until this day.
Of course, having experienced culture shock in one country doesn’t mean you can get used to it in another.
Years later, when I moved to China, my experience was special. The culture there was something very foreign—down to how to buy things. Before moving there, I had never heard of WeChat or Alipay. I wasn’t prepared at all for how important these things would be.
Although maybe being far away from my home country can sometimes seem upsetting, experiencing culture shock reminds me that I am exploring different parts of the world and that I should be thankful for what I’m taking in. An American-British author once said that “the greatest payback of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time”.
