Do you know what the world used to be like when I was young? I was born 80 years ago in a small town in the countryside. Life used to be very different then. We didn't have cell phones and when we wanted to talk to our friends, we would go over to their house and say "hello". We didn't have e-mails, either. So we had to write letters and these used to take a long time to reach someone from another town. But now, almost everything is better and faster than before. No one can tell the future.
When we traveled from town to town, we used to walk or ride horses. Later we had buses but very few people had cars. We used to run outside when we heard one coming. It was such a wonderful thing to see! Air travel was fun and we used to dream of taking an airplane, but now everyone does. It's so common today.
Food is another big difference. There weren't any supermarkets so we used to grow our own food. We would exchange some with people from other towns to buy the things we didn't have. We didn't have fridges so we kept things cool in a special room downstairs. We could keep carrots for a long time, but I hated them. I used to try feeding them to the dog when my mother wasn't looking but he didn't like them, either.
But the biggest difference is electricity(电). We didn't have any in our town! At night, we used to light candles when we wanted light and we burned coal(煤) and wood to keep warm. We didn't have televisions, but that didn't stop us from having fun. We played games and put on shows ourselves. In summer, we used to go swimming in the river.
Life used to be very different, but we were happy.
