Hurricane and tornado: What's the difference?
Hurricanes and tornadoes are strong storms that can destroy almost everything in their way. What are the differences between them? Let's find out.
Hurricane
A hurricane is a very strong and dangerous storm with high winds and heavy rain. It has a round shape. It forms over warm ocean water and gets its power from the heat of the water. The wind in a hurricane can reach speeds of at least 74 miles per hour.
Although the centre of the storm, called the "eye", is the calmest part, the strong winds, heavy rain and big waves around the "eye" can cause great damage. As a hurricane moves over land, it slowly gets weaker, yet it can still cause problems. Hurricanes are very large in size (up to 1,000 miles in diameter) and can last for a week or more. To stay safe during a hurricane, people should stay indoors, keep away from windows, and stay updated on weather news. It's also important to prepare food, water and a flashlight in case the power goes out.
Tornado
A tornado is a fast-spinning tube of air shaped like a funnel (漏斗). It forms from strong thunderstorms when warm air meets cold air. The wind in a tornado can go as fast as 300 miles per hour!
Unlike hurricanes, tornadoes do not have a clear "eye" because they are more difficult to see clearly and may have smaller spinning parts inside.
Tornadoes can happen over both land and water. They are about a thousand times smaller than hurricanes in diameter and usually last only about an hour, but their wind is very strong and can cause terrible damage. To stay safe during a tornado, people should seek shelter in a small room with no windows or stay in a basement. They should crouch down (蹲下), cover their heads, and wait until the storm has fully passed.
