Yang Zhenning was one of the greatest physicists in the world. He was born in 1922 and passed away in Beijing in 2025 at the age of 103. His life was full of achievements and love for his motherland.
Yang loved science from a young age. He studied hard, and then went to the US for further study in 1945. In 1956, together with Li Zhengdao, he discovered “parity nonconservation(宇称不守恒)”. In 1957, they won the Nobel Prize in physics for this great discovery. They became the first Chinese scientists to get this honor, which made all Chinese people proud. Yang also had other achievements in physics, which helped the development of both physics and mathematics. In his life, he wrote many important papers and books, and his research helped people understand the universe better.
Besides his scientific achievements, Yang had a deep love for China. In 1971, he became the first famous overseas Chinese scientist to visit China after the improvement of China-US relations, building a bridge for academic(学术的)exchanges between the two countries. In 1998, he came back to Tsinghua University to teach and spent his later years training young Chinese scientists. He gave up his US citizenship in 2015 and became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, devoting(奉献)all his efforts to China's science and education. He also set up funds to help Chinese young scholars study and do research, and gave a lot of valuable materials to Tsinghua University.
Yang's motto was “Better to be honest than tricky; better to be simple than fancy.” He not only left great scientific theories to the world, but also taught us to dare to question and keep exploring. He spent his whole life pursuing the truth of science and loving his motherland. Yang Zhenning is a role model for all of us, and his spirit will live on forever.
