Dr. John W. Pilley is a retired psychology professor at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He welcomed Chaser into his family in 2004. And now Chaser has known more than 1, 000 words.
Dr. Pilley, 85, has written a book about how he taught his dog. And while Dr. Pilley notes that his dog can follow his orders, he thinks that any dog can understand the language with a bit of help. Dr. Pilley said, "I want to teach others how to teach their own dogs by my book. Besides, as people realize their dogs' abilities, dogs and other animals will be given more respect."
He explains that there is only one thing owners need to know when they teach their dogs and that is play. "Play is much more powerful than food. They don't get tired of play. "he said. Using games such as finding, chasing and playing with toys, Dr. Pilley has taught Chaser many words. When Chaser was just ten weeks old, Dr. Pilley began to teach her like this: If he played with Chaser and saw her fetch something, he would say the word "fetch" until she connected that word with what she was doing.
