Mira lived with her mom in Kwa Mashu. She loved playing outside whenever she had free time. One morning, her mom told her that she wouldn’t be able to play outside. Mira looked outside and saw fallen trees, a lot of water on the roads, and houses that had been washed away. Her favorite mango tree was also missing.
“Mom, what happened?” Mira asked.
“We had heavy rains last night,” her mom replied.
“That’s terrible!” Mira said, feeling sad. “Does this mean we can never get out of the house?”
“Oh no, dear,” her mom answered. “It’s safe to go outside now. Let’s go and help Zondi!”
Zondi was an old woman who lived alone. Mom and Mira went across the road to visit her. When Zondi saw them, her face cheered up. Some of the neighbors were already helping her clean the floors.
“I brought you some candies, Zondi,” Mira said.
Zondi smiled. “You are such a sweet young girl,” she said. “I feel much better with all of you helping me.”
