On the 12th of August, I was awakened at seven o'clock in the morning by Karl Ivanitch. He slapped(拍打) the fly on the wall close to my head with a fly-flap(苍蝇拍) made of sugar paper and a stick. He was too careless and he hit the picture behind my bed. Unluckily, the dead fly fell down on my hair. I flicked(弹) the dead fly on the floor with my finger. I looked at Karl Ivanitch with sleepy, wrathful eyes. He wore a cotton coat and a red hat. He went on walking around the wall and slapping flies.
I thought to myself, “I am just a small boy. Why did he trouble me? Why didn't he go killing flies around Woloda's bed? No! Woloda is older than me. And I am the youngest of the family. He woke me up, but he pretended not to notice it. I don't like him. I don't like his clothes and hat.”
But while I was thinking about this, Karl Ivanitch walked to his bed and looked at his watch. Then he turned around to us in the most cheerful mood.
“Get up, children! Your mother is already in the dining room,” he said loudly. Then he sat down at my feet. “Well, well, little lazy one!” he said. “How kind he is, and how much he likes us!” I thought to myself...
