As a Reading Brother volunteer, I found Rosie had a speech problem and couldn't read as well as her classmates. Reading was a big challenge for her.
I worked with all students one by one to improve their reading. When it was Rosie's turn, I always smiled at her, so she liked to sit close to me. I watched her fingers move slowly under each letter as she read with difficulty. When she finally read a word correctly, her face lit up with a big smile and her eyes shone with joy.
Before the school year ended, I gave Rosie the book Little Women. Days later, I saw her reading it aloud. Her teacher said she hardly put it down. I was deeply moved and asked her to continue reading for me.
To my surprise, her voice was much clearer now. The book's pages were worn from being read many times. "What a good book! It encouraged me a lot," she said happily.
At that moment, as a writer, I realized I must take my writing seriously. I should write stories that can change a child's life and make a difference, just like Louisa May Alcott did.
