①Twenty years ago, a new version(版本) of *The Peony Pavilion* (《牡丹亭》), a great work of Chinese Kunqu Opera that includes music, poetry, beautiful clothes, and smooth actions, came out in Taiwan, China, causing great excitement and then touring worldwide.
②This was not a usual version. Known as the youth version of *The Peony Pavilion*, it hoped to bring new life into the traditional art form. “Many young people saw Kunqu for the first time through this play and later fell in love with it,” said Bai Xianyong, the producer of the play.
③Actually, Bai's love for bringing back Kunqu wasn't an accident. “At that time, many Kunqu masters were nearing retirement(退休), and there was a real danger that this art form would face a lack(缺乏) of skill and tradition,” Bai said. “To make it stay active, we need to attract young people back to the theater as soon as possible.”
④In 2003, a group of young actresses and actors in their 20s joined Bai's training camp to learn Kunqu's skills. “The main actor practiced walking on knees until his knees were hurt, and the main actress wore out(磨坏) more than ten pairs of shoes during the training,” Bai said. “Finally, in 2006, the play triumphed across four University of California schools, with a full house at each show.
