2026年练习部分八年级英语下册沪教版五四制第26页答案
4 Read the story. 阅读故事。
Have you ever imagined life with no light or colours? For blind people, everyday tasks become challenges. This was true for Louis Braille. The French boy's life changed when he was three.
$□$ One day, a soldier who knew a special code used in wars visited Louis's school. The code had 12 raised dots. He explained that soldiers often passed messages secretly with the special code in wars. They could feel the dots and got the message even in the dark.
$□$ Louis couldn't learn well at school though he was clever. Luckily, he could attend a school for blind boys in Paris when he was ten. There were fourteen books with special raised letters there, but they were hard for him to read. Louis was very upset.
$□$ While playing with a sharp tool in his father's factory, Louis accidentally hurt his eye. Unfortunately, he lost his eyesight a few days later because of an infection (感染) from the tool.
$□$ How excited Louis was when he heard it! He thought blind kids like him could use this way for reading. Later, Louis simplified (简化) the code by reducing the number of dots from twelve to six and improved it. He worked on the code through his life until it was easy for blind people of all ages to use.
His work resulted in "Braille" writing, named after him. The first Braille book was published in 1829, and Braille is still used by blind people today. Thanks to Braille, blind people can feel the letters with their fingers. It gives them a new freedom — to read!
