(原创)"Are we there yet?" We've all asked at one time or another—whether it's a drive to a friend's house or a road trip across the country. And we've all heard the same answer: "No." That may change soon, thanks to a new means of long-distance transportation: the Hyperloop.
Traveling in a Hyperloop is similar to going down a water slide, but it is much faster. People will ride in pods that move very quickly through a metal tube(金属管). Traveling from Washington, D.C. to New York City will take only half an hour!
Does the Hyperloop sound like something in the science fiction? Many people might have seen such ideas only in books or TV shows. However, some companies are now working to make the Hyperloop a reality. They say the system will be ready for people within ten years.
It starts with an airtight tube made of steel and concrete. Inside the tube, pods run along a track at a speed faster than 1,000 kilometers per hour. This is made possible by motors with electromagnets(电磁铁). The steel and concrete make each pod float above the track and move quickly down the tube. The speed is also helped by equipment that clears the tube of air. Without air, the pods move with less friction. That makes the travel through the tube fast and smooth.
Speed is just one strong point of the Hyperloop system. It is also expected to cause less pollution by using solar panels(太阳能电池板) to create energy. As we become more and more worried about the effect of travel on the environment, this is a big selling point. If it helps solve the problem, the Hyperloop might become more popular than cars and trucks in the future.
1. Which of the following can be inferred from Paragraphs 2 & 3? >> 细节推理题
A. The water slide is an important part in Hyperloop system.
B. The metal tube is used in a similar way to the water slide.
C. Ten years is enough to solve all the problems of Hyperloop.
D. The idea of building a Hyperloop comes from the science fiction.
2. Which of the following is the best to fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?
A. How does a Hyperloop work?
B. What are the parts of a Hyperloop?
C. How does the company make the Hyperloop a reality?
D. What makes the Hyperloop move quickly and smoothly?
3. What is not the possible advantage(优势) of Hyperloop traveling mentioned in the passage?
A. Time-saving.
B. Smooth.
C. Green.
D. Cheap.
4. Where is the passage probably from? >> 文章出处题
A. A traveling guide.
B. A scientific book.
C. A storybook.
D. An art magazine.

(原创)At the break of day, Ehemat Tohti, a 55-year-old electrical(电的) worker and his workmates prepared their equipment and embarked on their journey into the heart of the Taklamakan Desert, China's largest desert, to begin a day of patrolling(巡逻).
They are responsible for checking and fixing a 220kV transmission line(输电线) crossing this desert, also known as the "Sea of Death". "We need to cross the desert once a month to check the 729 transmission towers in order to ensure the power supply(供电) for counties and villages along the Taklimakan. The work is challenging, yet meaningful," Ehemat Tohti said.
In the fall noon, the desert's surface is still hot, while the temperature between morning and evening has changed greatly. "Now the temperature difference between morning and evening is about 20℃. It was cold when we set off. As we went further, the temperature grew, only to fall down again in the evening. So it's necessary to take both heavy and light clothing," he said.
Since most of the route was impossible to reach by car, they needed to travel by motorcycle and on foot for their work. Walking through the desert was difficult. "The harsh environment is not only unbearable for people, but also can easily cause breakdowns of their motorcycles. Moreover, the hidden roots of red willow and populus euphratica trees, buried under the sand, often puncture the tires, making an unseen danger," he said.
"The desert is beautiful, but it's also unpredictable. So you don't know what you're going to meet," he added. They face lots of challenges during their patrols, including floods, swamps, and meeting wild animals such as boars and foxes.
Luckily, in 2022, drones(无人机) came to help their patrol work. "Human workers can patrol up to about 20 power towers a day, but with the help of drones, we can cover nearly 100 towers." Ehemat Tohti also said that he didn't plan to retire. "I want to share my experience and skills with more people and keep learning more knowledge."
