On 23 July 2020, China's first Mars probe(航天探测器), Tianwen-1, was sent into space from Wenchang, Hainan Island. This spacecraft took its name from an ancient poem by Qu Yuan (340-278 BCE). Its name shows China's determination(决心) to explore the universe.
Mars has interested people for thousands of years. About 3,000 years ago, in ancient China, people already knew about the red planet and began to study how it moved. However, it was difficult to find out more about the planet before the 20th century. Thanks to the hard work of scientists, we have learnt a lot about the planet. Spacecraft like Tianwen-1 will help us find out more about our neighbour.
After travelling more than 470 million kilometres, Tianwen-1 reached Mars on 10 February 2021. It moved around the planet for more than three months before landing on the surface of the planet on 15 May. After landing, it released(放出) a 240-kilogram rover named Zhurong.
During the next 100 days, Zhurong drove 1,000 metres on the planet's surface and continued its mission. It took photos of Mars, studied different kinds of rocks, and then sent the information back to Earth.
The success of Tianwen-1 is only the beginning of China's Mars exploration programme. Maybe one day, Chinese astronauts will visit Mars.

1. It came from an ancient poem by Qu Yuan. 2. It took photos of Mars, studied different kinds of rocks, and then sent the information back to Earth. 3. Exploring the universe needs great determination, and China will never stop exploring space.
