Ibrahim Hamadtou of Egypt was just 10 years old when a train accident took away both of his arms. Children are resilient (适应力强的), and Ibrahim didn’t let his life-changing conditions keep him from playing, working and finally growing up to marry and have three kids. Oh, did we say he’s also a world-famous table tennis player?
“In our village, we could only play table tennis and soccer — that’s why I played both,” Ibrahim said. “I played soccer first because of my disability. Then I played table tennis as a challenge. I was in the club where I was officiating (担任裁判) a match between two of my friends,” he said. “They disagreed on a point, when I counted the point in favour of one of them. The other player told me not to step in as I will never be able to play. It was at that time that I decided to play table tennis.”
And he did play! Ibrahim has won several awards in his career so far, including silver medals (银牌) in the African Para Table Tennis Championships in 2011 and 2013.
To play, Ibrahim holds the racket (球拍) in his mouth and uses his foot to serve the ball. With hard practice this skill was improved. Ibrahim now competes against some of the greatest players in the world and has attended the last two Paralympic Games. Although he didn’t win against China’s Chen Chao at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, he has gained international recognition for his perseverance (承认他的毅力) and talent.

I believe honesty is one of the greatest gifts. I know they call it a lot of names these days, like truth, and forthrightness. But it doesn’t make any difference what they call; it’s still what makes a man a good citizen (公民). This is my rule, and I try to live by.
One time in Brooklyn, I found a gold ring in my taxi. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of packages that day, so I went back to where I had dropped her off. It took me almost two days to look for her in order to return her ring to her. Although I didn’t get as much as “thank you”, I still felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she did.
I was born and raised in Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years old. Then I came to this country where I held several jobs to make money. After a few years, I bought my own taxi and have owned one ever since. It hasn’t been too easy at times, but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit put away for a rainy day.
In all my years of driving a taxi, I have never had any trouble with the public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a little angry or impolite once in a while, I just agree with them and then they behave themselves.
I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they tip (付小费) or not. I believe honesty and try to be a good member of my community. I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the longer I try, the easier it gets.
