We know Thomas Edison invented the light bulb and many other things. He had one favorite invention. It was the phonograph (留声机) or “talking machine”,which recorded sound and played it back. Edison loved it so much that he called it his “baby”.
At first,the sound that the machine produced was very loud. And there was no way to control the volume (音量) of sound. The sound that came from the horn (喇叭) was so loud that people could not talk while the music was played. The noise gave some people headaches.
To control the volume,people started putting socks into the horn to soften the sound. Up until the 1930s,teenagers always put socks into their record players. It kept their parents from complaining (抱怨) about the loud music. Finally,a sound control was invented. Then socks went back where they belonged—on people's feet.
