When it comes to warm-weather activities that are good for your health, you probably think of walking, hiking or running. But there's another beloved activity—gardening.
A busy day in the garden can be a good form of exercise. It is helpful for your physical health. People breathe deeper when they are outside. As people breathe deeper, the oxygen(氧气) level in their blood slowly increases, making them feel refreshed.
Spending time outdoors has been shown to help lift spirits and lower levels of stress. After a working day in the hospital, I would spend an hour or so in my garden. I find that pulling weeds(杂草)can be calm after a long day. It provides me with the chance to slow down, plan or work out a problem in my mind.
Gardening can also bring people together and make social connections stronger. The gardening community is rich with people willing to share their knowledge, time and sometimes plants with new gardeners. Many gardening friendships begin with celebrating a success or regretting a gardening mistake. The friendships that I've made have been the best gift that gardening has given me. During the spring, my friends and neighbours plan our vegetable gardens together. We discuss what works well or needs to be improved from last year. In summer, we share flowers with each other. In autumn, we host a big party to enjoy the fruits or vegetables together. These activities improve the joy we get out of the garden and bring us closer together.
