60-year-old Du Dejian comes from Zhangfang Village of Yongji, Shanxi Province. More than 40 years ago, Du found the villagers were short of knowledge of farming. To help them, Du decided to open a library in his village.
Du turned one of his rooms into a library. All he had in the library were an old table and four benches (长凳). With the help of his parents and his sister, Du bought some books and newspapers on farming. On January 1, 1981, Du’s family library opened.
The villagers could use the library for free. But few people went there to read. “At that time, people just trusted their own experience. They thought books had no use, ” said Du.
