While most Westerners know the story of Hua Mulan through a film, she has been a popular character of Chinese legend (传奇) for over a thousand years. One of the most famous stories about her is the 1917 Beijing Opera, Mulan Joins the Army.
Traditionally, women were not allowed to perform in Operas, so all the roles were played by men. By the time Mulan Joins the Army was first performed, women were no longer prohibited. But it was still common for men to perform female roles, so the part of Mulan was usually played by male actors. The most famous of these male actors is Mei Lanfang (1894 - 1961).
In short, the story is about a girl named Hua Mulan. Mulan’s father is called up to war, but she worries he is too elderly to fight, so she decides to dress up as a man and take his place. After many years of war, she is offered a reward for her service, but she turns it down because she only wishes to go home to her family as soon as possible. Although she made many friends during the war, they do not discover she is a woman until many years later!
Like nearly all Beijing Operas, not all of the opera is sung. There are also other different performance forms in the opera, such as one person talking, a dialogue, or conversations with more people. But nearly all parts were showed in a singsong voice. Mulan is a typical role of female characters in Beijing Opera, so the actor has to speak and sing in a high falsetto (男高音假声). This might be one of remained past customs, when men performed the female characters, they usually used artificially high - pitched voices (假高音).
