Buying the Case and Returning the Pearl
Long, long ago, there was a businessman who lived in the State of Chu. He made a living by selling jewelry (珠宝).
One day, he got a pearl (珍珠). He wanted to sell the pearl at a high price. He said to himself, “If I do something to make the pearl look nicer, it might look more expensive.” He looked at the pearl carefully, and then he came up with an idea.
The next day, he visited a carpenter (木匠). He asked the carpenter to make a beautiful small box for the pearl. The carpenter agreed to make the box soon.
After putting the pearl into the box, the businessman had a feeling of satisfaction. He knew his decision was right. The pearl really looked better.
The businessman met someone who wanted to buy the pearl as soon as he got to the State of Zheng. A man saw the pearl in the box. He couldn’t wait to pay for the pearl. After getting the money, the businessman gave the pearl and the box to the buyer.
The buyer touched the box and looked excited. After a while, he took out the pearl from the box and handed the pearl to the businessman. He said that the box looked nicer than the pearl. He didn’t want the pearl any more. So he returned the pearl to the businessman.
How silly the buyer was! He didn’t know which was really valuable.
