The Cold Food Festival, with a history of more than 2,600 years, is the only traditional festival named after food in China. It starts one or two days before the Qingming Festival in the Chinese calendar and is still celebrated in China as well as the nearby nations such as Korea and Vietnam.
The festival came into being with a historical story. It is said that Chong'er, a prince of Jin, met many difficulties while he fled (逃亡) around the warring states. Once, Chong'er was about to die for being hungry, Jie Zhitui cut off the flesh (肉) from his thigh (大腿) and offered it to the prince. In this way, Chong'er was saved. He was touched deeply when knowing the truth.
Later, Chong'er became Duke Wen of Jin (晋文公). Unwilling to be connected with a political event, Jie Zhitui hid with his mother in Mianshan Mountain. Chong'er went to invite him but failed. At last, in order to force Jie Zhitui out, Chong'er accepted someone's suggestion and ordered soldiers to burn down the mountain. The fire was on for three days. When the fire was out, Jie Zhitui and his mother were found dead, hugging a big tree. A letter written in blood was found in a tree hole, expecting the Duke to be with a clear and bright mind.
Filled with remorse, Chong'er ordered that each year during these three days, the setting of fire is not allowed — all food is to be eaten cold. Therefore, the Cold Food Festival got its name.
In Jiexiu City, Shanxi Province, where Jie Zhitui died, people still remember this tradition clearly. But even for them, the tradition of eating cold food is no longer practiced. As the Cold Food Festival and Qingming Festival are quite close to each other, people gradually celebrate them as one.

后来，重耳成为了晋文公。介子推不愿卷入政治事件，便和母亲一起躲进了绵山。重耳前去邀请他，但没有成功。最后，为了逼介子推出山，重耳接受了别人的建议，命令士兵放火烧山。大火烧了三天。火熄灭后，人们发现介子推和他的母亲抱着一棵大树死去了。在树洞里发现了一封血书，希望晋文公能有清明的头脑。
