The Colorado River supplies water to more than 36 million people in the south-western part of the USA and allows cities like Los Angeles to develop. However, it is hard to meet the region's need for water now.
The river once travelled from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of California. Now, dams control the river's water for human use. As a result, the delta(三角洲) at the river's mouth becomes dry and poor.
Not long ago, engineers opened the Morelos Dam to free a temporary burst of water. It allowed the river to reach the sea for the first time in 16 years. It also helped the river's delta come alive.
Several man-made lakes form because of the dams. "These lakes are like banks. They provide a place to save up water for not-so-rainy days—like right now," said an engineer named Taylor.
In wetter times, the river usually finished its journey to the sea. In drier times, however, spring floods brought life back to the delta for a short time. Such difference shows that a little water could make the river flow smoothly.
"Just add water and you can get something amazing," said another engineer. "In this way, we show how to manage rivers sustainably(可持续地) for both people and nature. Although a lot of rivers have similar problems, it's possible to restore them. If we can do it in the Colorado River Delta, we can do it almost anywhere."
