It is a hot summer day. A woodcutter is cutting wood in the forest.
Woodcutter: It's very hot today. But I must cut more wood. My mother is very sick. I must buy her some medicine.
The woodcutter is busy cutting wood. His axe drops from his hands and goes into a pond.
Woodcutter: Oh, no! My axe falls into the pond! That's my only axe! I still have to cut more wood. What shall I do? My poor mother!
The woodcutter sits near the pond and starts to cry.
Spirit: Young man, why are you crying?
Woodcutter: My axe falls into the pond. It is my only axe. I can't get it out.
Spirit: Are you crying because of an axe?
Woodcutter: No. I am crying because of my poor mother. I have to cut a lot of wood to buy medicine. But I can't cut any wood now.
Spirit: Hmm... Well then, I shall find your axe. Just wait here.
The Spirit goes into the pond for a few minutes and comes out with a shiny axe.
Spirit: Is this your axe?
Woodcutter: No, sir. That is not my axe. That axe is made of(由……制成) gold.
Spirit: Are you sure? Look again!
Woodcutter: Yes, I am very sure. That is not my axe.
Spirit: Wait again. I will be back.
The Spirit goes into the pond again and comes back with another axe.
Spirit: Is this your axe?
Woodcutter: No, no! That is not my axe either. That is a silver axe. My axe is not made of silver.
Spirit: Look carefully!
Woodcutter: My axe is made of iron. That one is not my axe.
Spirit: I am very sorry. This time I will get the right one. Please wait.
The Spirit comes back with an iron axe.
Spirit: Is this your axe?
Woodcutter: Oh, yes, yes! That is mine! That is my iron axe! Thank you so much.
Spirit: Hmm... You are honest and devoted. I would like to give you all three axes. Take them and go home now. Take good care of your mother.
