Dear Mr. Lincoln,
My father has just come from the fair and brought home your picture and Mr. Hamlin’s. I am a little girl only 11 years old, but want you should be President of the United States very much. So I hope you won’t think me very bold (大胆的) to write to such a great man as you are.
Do you have any little girls about as old as I am? If so, give her my love and tell her to write to me if you cannot answer this letter. I have got four brothers. Part of them will vote for you anyway. If you let your whiskers (络腮胡子) grow, I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you. You would look a great deal better because your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers and they would ask their husbands to vote for you. Then, you would be President. My father is going to vote for you and if I were a man, I would vote for you too.
I have got a little baby sister. She is nine weeks old and is just as cunning (狡猾的) as can be. When you direct your letter, direct to Grace Bedell, Westfield Chautauqua County, New York.
I must not write any more. Answer this letter right off. Goodbye.
Grace Bedell

Nate suffered a hard blow when he lost his job. When he entered his house, he said to his wife Sophia, “I lost my job. I am a complete loser.” “What great news!” Sophia replied. “Now you can write the book you have always wanted to write.”
“But I have no job and no prospect (前途) of a job,” Nate refused, completely without hope. “If I struggle to be a writer, then what will we live on?” Sophia took her husband by the hand and led him to the kitchen. Opening a drawer, she took out a box that was full of cash. “Where did you get this?” Nate was surprised. “It’s ours!” Sophia said. “I always knew that one day you would become a great writer if only you were given the chance. From the money you gave me for housekeeping every week, I have saved as much as I could, so you would have the chance. Now there is enough to last us a whole year.” What a surprise! What encouragement! What a wife! The unemployed husband put effort into writing in the following 12 months, and the novel he wrote became a literary masterpiece (文学巨作). D
The longer food is kept, the more likely it is to attract insects. To solve this problem, scientists have been working with different smells to find one strong enough to keep insects from going near food. One possibility would be to use plants with strong smells, like garlic or pine, to keep insects away. Unluckily, however, using these smells might keep some people away too!
A more hopeful repellent is citronella oil, which comes from a type of lemongrass. Scientists did an experiment using this oil with an insect—the red flour beetle. Scientists sprayed (喷洒) cardboard boxes with citronella oil and noticed that the beetles did not enter those boxes. They were much more interested in boxes that were not sprayed.
One problem with using citronella oil as a repellent, however, is that it does not last long. After a few months it loses its smell, and insects no longer find it unpleasant. Scientists hope to improve citronella oil so that its smell keeps strong for a longer time. It will also be necessary to make sure that the oil is not harmful to people, as scientists are still not sure if it is safe to use around food.
