A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple trees he grew.
One day, the friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but he did not know where to plant it.
He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbours would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit. Finally, he planted the tree in his woods. But without much sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.
Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. “What’s the difference?” the farmer said angrily and then told what he thought.
“Yes,” said the friend, “but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also have killed a good apple tree!”

It’s not always easy to eat healthy food when others seem to eat whatever they want. Follow the tips and know that it will make a difference in your life.
What about sweet food?
Everyone likes the taste of sweet food! A small amount of sweet food can be part of a healthy meal plan. Sugary food includes soda pop (苏打汽水), fruit drinks, honey, and candy. Desserts such as cakes, pies, cookies and ice cream contain a lot of fat as well as sugar. If you choose to eat any of the sweet food, just have a small amount at the end of a healthy meal. Have a piece of fruit if you are still hungry. Drink water, sugar - free soda and sugar - free fruit drinks if you are thirsty, instead of drinks that are all high in sugar.
How much should you eat?
Your height, weight, age, whether you are a boy or a girl, and how active you are will affect how much food you need to eat each day to stay at a healthy weight. Everyone is different. Talk to your doctor or diet expert about how much to eat, especially if you need to lose weight. If you take in more food than your body burns, you will gain weight. If you take in less food than your body burns, you will lose weight. For years people have enjoyed following the life of Garfield the cat. Garfield is a popular comic book character, known for being lazy and fat. But the cat was back in the news recently for something you might not expect.
A man in the USA changed Garfield’s gender to “none” on the cat’s web page. After that, many people got angry and kept changing Garfield’s web page. They argued about whether the cat was a boy, girl or neither. Finally the page was locked to stop people editing (编辑) it. Jim Davis, Garfield’s creator, settled (解决) the argument. “Garfield is male,” he simply told Washington Post. The 71 - year - old artist said he liked working with animals because they didn’t have to be old, young, boys or girls. He was angry that some people cared so much about Garfield’s gender.
It seems like quite an unnecessary argument to have. But it is not the only recent example of argument about gender.
To celebrate International Women’s Day in Australia earlier this year, the city of Melbourne made ten traffic lights with a figure (人形) dressed in a skirt. They were designed to celebrate women and give them more confidence in public. But not everyone thinks the idea is necessary. Some people think it is important for women to be treated fairly in Australia, but this idea is foolish.
“I’m all for doing anything we can for gender equity (公平), but really?” Melbourne mayor (市长) Robert Doyle told Herald Sun. The mayor said this idea is more likely to be laughed at than bring respect to women.

Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been found out that mice, when given a choice over a period of time, would rather choose water with vitamins (维生素) than water without vitamins even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a sweet taste was added to the water rich in vitamins, the mice did seem to prefer it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched (调换) to the clear water. However, they quickly broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.
In a classic experiment, the scientists placed all kinds of food before some babies of 6 to 12 months old. The babies were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating habits, but that over a period of time they tried to choose a well - balanced diet.
So, in choosing food, mice and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Apparently, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food choices are culturally determined and influenced by long - formed habits. Some people eat fox or dog meat, while we eat beef and pork. So what people eat and how much they eat seem to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.

B. Both babies and mice prefer sweet food and drinks.
C. Neither babies nor mice know what food is best for them.
D. Both babies and mice prefer the water which is rich in vitamins.
