Mr Dongguo and the Zhongshan wolf
One day, carrying a sack(布袋) of books, Mr Dongguo drove a donkey to the State of Zhongshan to look for an official post(谋求官职).
Suddenly, a wounded(受伤的) wolf ran to him and begged(乞求), “Sir, a hunter is running after me. I was shot and almost lost my life. I beg you to hide me in your sack, and I'll reward(报答) you well in the future.”
Mr Dongguo said, “I'll surely try to save you. This is something I should do.”
At this moment, the wolf curled up(蜷缩起来). Mr Dongguo tied it up with rope, put it into his sack and drove the donkey to the roadside.
A moment later, the hunter came up and found the wolf missing. He asked Mr Dongguo, “Did you see a wolf? Where did it run off?”
Mr Dongguo said, “I didn't see a wolf. This road leads to many byroads(支路). The wolf may escape(逃跑) from one of them.”
The hunter could do nothing but believe(相信) this to be true. So he turned around and left.
The wolf said in the sack, “Sir, please let me out of the sack.”
Mr Dongguo let the wolf out. But the wolf howled(嚎叫) at him, “Please, sir, now I am so starved(饥饿的). Please let me eat you up.”
Just then, the wolf bared its teeth, waved its claws and jumped upon him.
Mr Dongguo fought the wolf and kept on shouting, “You ungrateful(忘恩负义的) wolf! You ungrateful wolf!”
At this moment, an old farmer passed by. Mr Dongguo hurriedly got hold of him and asked him to pass judgement(审判).
The old farmer thought it over and said, “I don't believe either of you. How can this sack hold a wolf? Please do it again so I can see it with my own eyes.”
The wolf agreed. Again it lay on the ground, curled up into a ball, let Mr Dongguo tie it up and put it in the sack.
The old farmer tied up the sack at once and said to Mr Dongguo, “This beast(野兽) will never change its nature(本性). It is too stupid(愚蠢的) and too dangerous to be kind to a wolf.”
Then, he raised his hoe(锄头) and struck the wolf to death. Mr Dongguo finally saw the light, and said to the old farmer, “Thank you for saving my life today. I'll always remember this lesson.”
