Do you know what Jiaguan(加冠) is? It's the coming-of-age ceremony of boys in ancient
China. According to the ritual system(礼制) of the Zhou Dynasty, Guanli(冠礼) should be
held when a man turns twenty.
Traditional Guanli is usually held in the second month of the lunar calendar. During the
ten days before the ceremony, the man should choose a lucky day and tell his relatives and
friends the date. And three days before the ceremony, the man's family would choose two
distinguished guests(上宾), one to host the ceremony, and the other to help during the
ceremony.
At the ceremony, the host(usually the man's father) and the distinguished guests all wear
their full dresses(礼服). They help the man put on three guans: The first is zibuguan(缁布
After putting on each guan ,the distinguished guests would make a congratulatory speech(祝辞).
The gist of the speech is “You put on the clothes of an adult，please get rid of your boyishness.
You should pay attention to your manners and cultivate your virtues. And wish you a long life
and good fortune.”
After the ceremony，all the relatives and friends would have a big dinner together. And
the host would send the guests to the gate and give them presents like cloth，silk or meat.
