Bringing new life to old areas
A Read the podcast script about urban renewal. Write a T if a sentence is true, an F if it is false or an NM if it is not mentioned.
Host: Hello listeners and welcome to City Voices. Today, we're talking about urban renewal. Joining in this discussion is Jack Wei, an urban planner in Shanghai. Welcome, Jack.
Jack: Thanks. I'm happy to be here.
Host: Let's start with the simplest question: what is urban renewal?
Jack: In general, urban renewal is when we turn old, underused areas of a city into modern, useful spaces. Basically, it's about bringing new life to old or forgotten parts of a city so they can meet the needs of people today.
Host: Can you share an example?
Jack: Sure! I'll give you an example from Shanghai: Yangpu Riverside. It's a beautiful waterfront area now. But before the urban renewal project, it had many old, unused factories and wasn't making the best use of space. So... urban planners turned it into a lively spot with cool attractions like the Shanghai International Fashion Centre, the WorldSkills Museum and Green Hill. It's also become a great location for exciting cultural events.
Host: Sounds wonderful!
Jack: It is! Urban renewal projects like this are happening all over the world. Another famous project is the High Line in New York City. For this project, urban planners turned an old railway line into a lovely public park.
Host: I can see why urban renewal is important. It helps create public spaces for people to enjoy.
Jack: That's right. As our cities develop, it's really important to use limited urban space in smart ways.
Host: Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jack!
