Having English teachers as parents, Ben Miller was interested in reading as he grew up. Miller liked stories. His favourite book was by Alan Garner. Garner wrote many traditional folk stories.

How I Became a Dog Called Midnight is a popular book written by Miller. The fantasy book tells the story of a boy who swaps (交换) bodies with a dog in the enchanted fountain (魔法喷泉). The two must soon work together against a bad man before they are trapped (被困住) in each other's bodies forever.

Miller has a dog. It lies down with him when Miller is writing. When writing books about children, Miller looked at it for inspiration (灵感). “It looks like a man in a bear coat,” Miller says. “And it certainly gave me the idea to write a story about some special people and they could swap bodies with a dog.”

Miller reads his book to his children to test them out. He also hopes parents can read out his stories loud for their children because he loves the idea of families reading together. “Reading books is really fun,” he says. “It's like putting on a performance (表演).”
