Every sport has its great legend (传奇人物): soccer has Pele, basketball has Michael Jordan, and tennis, Steffi Graf. Is there one player who people think to be the best ever? Many would say that person is boxer (拳击手) Muhammad Ali, known to his fans as “The Greatest”.
Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky (肯塔基州) on 17 January 1942. At the age of 12, after his bike was stolen, young Ali began boxing. By the time he reached high school, he was a great amateur (业余的) boxer. After winning six state and two national boxing championships, he competed in the 1960 Olympics and won a gold medal. That same year, at the age of 18, he became a professional boxer.
From the start of his career, it was clear that Ali was different from other players. He was outspoken (直率的), confident, strong-willed and talked publicly about himself. The man who called himself “The Greatest” still faced many challenges, though. After winning his Olympic gold medal, he returned home to the United States. He was not allowed to stay in certain hotels or eat in certain restaurants because of the colour of his skin. Ali was angry with racism (种族歧视) in the US, so he threw his Olympic medal into a river.
In 1964, Ali beat Charles Liston to become the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Ali surprised the world again in 1966, not for his boxing skills this time. He refused to join the army, which all young men in the US had to do at that time. As a result, Ali’s heavyweight title was taken away, and he was sent to prison for five years.
Ali retired (退休) from boxing in 1981, ending a career of 61 fights, of which he won 56. In 1996, he was known as a sporting hero at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Atlanta. The crowd at the Olympic Games cheered when Ali lit the Olympic flame.

Who wants to eat food that is thrown away as waste? Believe it or not, that’s exactly what world leaders did at a lunch held by the United Nations in 2015.
During the meal, the world leaders enjoyed dishes like salads and burgers made with thrown-away vegetables and fruit. Chef Dan Barber, who helped create the meal, hoped that the experience would make the leaders pay more attention to the problem of food waste. It is a huge problem. One out of nine people on the Earth does not get enough food. Yet every year over one third of the food produced worldwide goes to waste!
Why is so much food wasted? Firstly, food is often thrown away before it reaches customers because too much of it is produced, or because it is not kept properly on farms. Secondly, shops, supermarkets and restaurants usually throw away unsold food. Finally, customers often buy more food than they need, so a lot of uneaten food is wasted.
How can you waste less food? When eating out, you may ask for less food and take home what is left. Visit fast food restaurants less often, since they are usually more wasteful. Encourage your favourite restaurants to give unsold food to food banks.
You can also waste less food at home. Use smaller rice bowls so that you serve less rice. Encourage family members to use unfinished rice to make rice puddings. Tell family members to make a shopping list and buy only what is on the list when shopping for food.
Food waste is a growing problem and we, either farmers or food sellers or customers, must take this problem more seriously and do what we can to help.
