(A)
“Class, we are going to get a class pet,” said Mrs Frink. “We need to decide what kind of pet.” Eric raised his hand. “I want a dog!” “No way!” said Pearl. “Dogs chew (咬) everything!”
“A dog is not a good class pet,” said Mrs Frink. “Dogs need too much care.” “I like hamsters,” said Alice. “Let’s get a giraffe!” said Owen. Everybody laughed.
Mrs Frink frowned. “Please be serious, Owen.”
More kids shouted ideas. The classroom was very noisy.
Mrs Frink held up a hand. “Let’s take a survey,” she said.
“We’ll each vote for the pet we want.”
The teacher passed out pieces of paper for voting. When everyone was done, Mrs Frink collected the papers.
“Now we’ll count the votes,” she said. “We’ll make a bar graph. Then we’ll see which pet got the most votes.”
Mrs Frink drew a graph on the whiteboard. “Let’s write numbers along the left side of the graph,” said Mrs Frink. “And let’s write pets at the bottom of the graph.”
Mrs Frink read the first vote. “One vote for hamster.”
Alice wrote “hamster” at the bottom of the graph. She coloured up to the 1.
Then Mrs Frink read another vote. Alice added that to the graph. Soon the bar graph was almost full.
“Boo!” said Alice. “Hamster got just one vote!”
“Giraffe got two votes!” Owen laughed.
“I see four votes for fish,” said Pearl. “That’s what I voted for!”
“Hedgehog (刺猬) got four votes too,” said Eric. “It’s a tie!”
“No, there’s one more vote,” said Mrs Frink. She coloured one of the bars on the graph. “So, what pet will we get?”
“A hedgehog!” The class cheered.
