World-famous physicist Chenning Yang passed away in Beijing on October 18,2025,at the age of 103. He was born in Hefei,Anhui Province in 1922. He studied at Southwest Associated University(西南联大)and later continued his education in the United States. In 1948,he earned his PhD from the University of Chicago and began his great career in physics.
Yang achieved many important breakthroughs(突破)in physics. In 1956,he and Tsung-Dao Lee discovered that in some reactions(反应),the left and right sides do not work differently. This discovery made them win the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957,making them the first Chinese scientists to receive this honor. Earlier,in 1954,he had created the Yang-Mills Theory(杨—米尔斯理论)with Mills,which became fundamental(基本原理)to modern physics.
Yang never forgot his homeland. He returned to China in 1971. He taught at Tsinghua University to train young scientists and support China's scientific development.
