Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Nüwa (女娃). She was the daughter of the Emperor Yan. Nüwa was very lively (活泼) and kind.
One day, Nüwa went to the East Sea to play. She was so happy and excited that she didn’t notice the coming danger. Suddenly, a huge wave (浪) came and she fell into the sea.
After her death, Nüwa’s spirit turned into a beautiful bird called Jingwei. Jingwei had a white beak (喙), red claws (爪), and a colourful tail (尾巴). She strongly hates the sea for taking away her life.
Jingwei decided to fill up the East Sea so that no more lives would be lost in the same way. She flies between the mountains and the sea every day. She picked up small branches and stones in her beak and dropped them into the sea.
The sea laughed at Jingwei and said, “You’re so small. You can’t fill me up, no matter how hard you try.” But Jingwei didn’t give up. She answered, “I’ll never stop, even if it takes me lots of years.”
In the story, Jingwei was a little bird, but it was so brave (勇敢的). It didn’t give up even though filling the sea was too difficult. It makes me understand that when we face problems in our lives, we shouldn’t just give up easily. We should be like Jingwei and keep trying hard to overcome (克服) those problems.
