Long, long ago there lived a king in Greece whose name was Midas. He was a greedy man and loved gold better than anything else in the world.
One day he asked the gods to give him still more gold. The gods decided to punish him and said, “Very well. In the morning everything that you touch will become gold.” Midas was excited when he heard this. “I shall be the richest man in the world,” he said to himself.
He got up early next morning. When he touched his bed, it turned into gold. He began to dress himself, and his clothes became gold. Midas was delighted. He went into the garden full of flowers. They turned into gold as soon as he touched them. Then he went to have his breakfast. The milk and bread immediately turned into gold.
When his daughter saw Midas, she ran up to him. King Midas was very fond of his daughter and he kissed her softly. Then and there she turned into a golden statue.
Midas was now very sad and regretted. He went into his palace, with eyes filled with tears, and he begged the gods to take away the Golden Touch.
“I was very foolish to love gold so much,” he said. “Take all my gold and return my daughter.”
“Go,” said the gods, “and wash your hands in the river near your garden. The water will take away the Golden Touch.”
Midas went to the river and washed his hands. Then he ran quickly to the golden statue of his little girl. He kissed her again and she changed back into his pretty little daughter.
Midas never forgot this lesson. He knew that gold did not bring happiness.

When I started teaching in a middle school, I was sure I would change the world and touch children who needed love. Although most of my students seemed to respond pretty well to my teaching, there was a small group of teenage girls who became more and more hostile (敌意的) towards me.
One day a fight happened in my classroom. Trying to stop it, I stepped in to face one of those hostile girls, who started hitting me in the face. Two boys jumped up to control the girl, but the injury (伤害) was done. While the girl was suspended (停课) for a few days, I was determined (决定) that she would not return to my classroom. But I also prayed (企盼). I wanted to see all the students right there in my daily work at school. On the top of my daily teaching - plan book, I wrote this statement, “To see all the children in my classroom is always beautiful.” With this view I could expect to heal (治愈) any anger towards the girl in my heart. After her suspension, she returned to my classroom. I learnt the girl’s mother was trying to raise six children after her husband died in a car accident. The mother and I agreed to work together to help her eldest daughter.
There were no more incidents (事件) of anger the rest of the year. In fact, in the following seven years I was still working at that school. I taught all six of this family’s children. When the youngest child was in my class, the mother told me, “Our family loves you. Every year one of my kids says, ‘I hope I’m in her classroom!’”
( ) 53. At the beginning of teaching, the author _________.
A. was full of confidence in herself
B. doubted if she could be a good teacher
C. was sure she could get support from parents
D. decided to change her students’ lives
( ) 54. What happened in the classroom one day?
A. A girl fought with two boys.
B. The author was hit by a girl.
C. The author hit a girl in her face.
D. The author fought with several girls.
( ) 55. It can be inferred (推断) from the article that _________.
A. the author didn’t get on with her students
B. the author didn’t get angry with the girl at all
C. the girl’s mother was very thankful to the author
D. all the six kids of the family were hard to teach

A new study finds that plants communicate with one another to warn of danger.
We often consider plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move. They don’t make sounds, and they don’t seem to act on anything. But as is often the case, plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is chemical.
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, give out chemicals into the air to help neighbouring plants. These chemical warnings can spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation (虫害), so other plants can protect themselves. But how plants receive and act on many of the information exactly is still mysterious.
In this week’s Science Magazine, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They have found out one chemical message and traced it all the way from beginning to end.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest (害虫). To start out, they grew plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube (管子). One plant was infested and placed upwind and the others were uninfested and placed downwind. The downwind plants were later exposed (暴露) to the pest. The results showed that plants near sick neighbours before were able to protect themselves better against the pest.
They found one chemical appeared more often in the exposed plants. The chemical is called HexVic. The scientists discovered where HexVic came from, and put it over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to produce HexVic. Researchers made sure that uninfested plants could fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to protect themselves? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbours.
It is not a simple story, and it may be happening in more plant species than tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. In a word, we know that plants not only communicate, but also look out for one another.
( ) 56. According to Paragraphs 1 - 3, which of the following statements is true?
A. Plants communicate with one another to have fun.

( ) 57. The underlined word “traced” in Paragraph 4 probably means “_________”.
A. attacked
B. followed
C. doubted
D. developed
( ) 58. For scientists, which are the right steps to watch tomato plants infested by a pest?

③ Expose the downwind plants to the pest.
④ Grow plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube.
A. ③①②④
B. ①④③②

Jim Hawkins loved adventure. When a blind man by the name of Black Dog came to live with him and his mother in their inn, Jim had no idea he was to get into one great big dangerous adventure.
Black Dog was an unfriendly old man. One morning, he was found dead in his room. Jim and his mother opened his trunk and found an old map. It looked like a treasure map. Jim was excited and told his mother that he would go and look for the treasure. But before that he went to meet the village Squire (乡绅).
“Sir, this is what I have found in the blind man’s trunk who died yesterday. It looks to me like a map of some hidden treasure,” said Jim to the Squire pulling out the map. “Indeed it does,” agreed the Squire. “We should set sail immediately to look for the treasure.”
So, the next day, Jim and Squire boarded a ship, to set sail to an unknown island, looking for treasure. It was a long journey. On the ship, Jim met a one - legged sailor who was the ship’s cook. His name was Long John Silver. He always had his pet parrot perched on his shoulder. Silver was very friendly and had Jim rolling with laughter with his stories.
One stormy night, Jim, feeling hungry, walked up to one of the barrels (桶) with apples. Suddenly, he heard voices. Jim felt suspicious (怀疑的) and jumped inside the barrel. Once inside he froze and held his breath to listen carefully. Long John Silver was talking. He was saying, “Tomorrow we will reach Treasure Island. As soon as I give the signal, we will take all the passengers on board as prisoners. Then we can take the map and dig up the treasure. Let us go back to our places before anyone sees.”
When Jim was sure everyone had gone, he climbed out of the barrel. He immediately warned the Squire of Long John Silver’s plan. The next morning, when the island was visible (看得见的) in the distance, Jim jumped off the ship and swam to the shore. There he met a ragged old man, who said, “I am Ben Gunn. I have been shipwrecked (遭遇海难) on this island for 20 years. I suppose you have come to look for the treasure.” Jim nodded and said, “I jumped off the ship and there are dangerous men on that ship. Please help me. My friend the Squire is on that ship too.”
Ben Gunn knew the island very well. He laid out traps for Long John Silver and his men. When they came shouting and waving their guns, they fell into a hole in the ground dug by Ben Gunn. They were trapped. Jim and Ben Gunn dug up treasure and swam to the ship. Jim, Ben and Squire sailed back home leaving Long John Silver and his men on the island forever.
