These days, we see many Chinese fantasy(玄幻)TV series and comic shows. We’re surprised by their ties to our traditional culture. Names of the worlds and roles in these shows are good examples of this. They make the shows both fun and deep.
In these TV series, humans, monsters(妖怪)and fairies(仙子)usually live together in the fantasy world. Some perfectly show the ancient ideas and stories seen in the Classic of Mountains and Seas. Ancient people believed that all lives had souls(灵魂), and that they could live together in peace.
Traditional culture is also seen in the recent season of cartoon show Fog Hill of Five Elements (《雾山五行》). It tells the story of people using the power from the five traditional elements to fight evil (邪恶). The cultural importance it carries has started a hot discussion among people who watched it.
In the show, the three big monsters are named greed (贪), anger (嗔) and ignorance (痴). These are the three poisons (毒) in Buddhism (佛教). The five families with the power of the five elements have to fight the three monsters to protect the world. It shows the Buddhist idea that, for a happy life, the three poisons need to be controlled.
Both cartoons and TV dramas now use modern technologies and new stories to present (呈现) traditions. They breathe new life into Chinese culture.
1. Do only humans live in the fantasy world in these TV series?

2. What Buddhist idea does the cartoon express?

3. Do you watch Chinese fantasy comic shows often? What do you think of them?
