One day，Zengzi’s wife (妻子) went to the market. Her son wanted to go with her. She didn’t agree (同意). So she said，“You can’t go with me. It is too far.” Her son was unhappy. He cried loudly. At last，Zengzi’s wife said，“Don’t cry. I’m going to kill a pig and then we can eat the meat tomorrow.” Her son was happy and told his father about it.
The next day，Zengzi’s wife didn’t kill the pig. But Zengzi started to kill it. His wife ran to him quickly and said，“I was just kidding.” Zengzi said，“A child should not be kidded like that! Children will follow their parents. Now you lie (撒谎) to him. That’s teaching him to lie to others! If a mother lies to her son，he will not trust her any more. That is not the right way to teach a child. We must keep our words. Parents must be a good example (榜样) to their children.”
Zengzi’s wife agreed and killed the pig together with Zengzi.
