任务四 阅读表达
Today, 450 students from a Sichuan high school are taking a research trip along the Silk Road.
The students study at No. 1 Secondary School in Chengdu. In November, they travelled to 10 cities, such as Dunhuang and Xi’an, to do research. They not only learned new things, but also challenged some of their own ideas.
Liu Zhiyan, 12, and her teammates studied characters at the Dunhuang frescoes (壁画). They looked at the figures, expressions and gestures(手势) of the characters. They were created during the Tang Dynasty.
To take a close look at the frescoes, they visited 10 caverns(大洞穴) at the Mogao Grottoes(莫高窟). When their tour guide talked, they quickly took notes. They found that most characters from the period looked like women. “They look plump(丰腴的) and happy. They enjoy singing and dancing,” Liu said.
The trip offered students first-hand information for their research. It also encouraged them to question some of their ideas. When Qu Rongrong, 12, saw plump women in frescoes and sculptures from the Tang Dynasty, a question came to her mind: Modern people think being slim is beautiful, but why did people at that time like bigger women? Was this true? She decided to find the answer.
They turned to old poems for help. Her team picked 635 poems from the Tang Dynasty. Through checking key words like fei(肥) and xiyao(细腰), they found that most of the women in the poems were “slim” instead of “fat”.
“It shows that being plump was not popular during the Tang Dynasty. Perhaps only noblemen(贵族成员) liked large women, as shown in artworks,” Qu said. Although this topic still needs further research, Qu was happy that they could take their first step towards finding the answer.
