Beavers(河狸) are the biggest rodents in North America. They have strong, orange teeth that can chew(咀嚼) through trees. Just like people build houses, beavers build dams(坝) and homes in the water!
When building a dam, beavers also make their home. In the middle of a pond, they pile(堆) up mud, rocks, and sticks to make a round, messy house. The top has a small opening for air, but the doors are underwater, so other animals can't get in. Inside, there's an empty space with a platform made of rocks and mud. The beavers line it with grass and wood to make a warm home. This is where the family stays all winter—and for many years!
Beavers are great swimmers. They move faster in water than on land, so they dig water paths (called channels) from the pond into the forest. Swimming with tree branches through these channels is easier than pulling them on land. They also dig safety tunnels to the pond, so they can hide quickly if in danger.
Beavers even use their pond as a fridge! All summer, they collect leaves and tree bark(树皮) to eat in winter. They cut leafy branches and store them underwater near their home. The cold water keeps the food fresh. Even if the pond freezes, their food stays safe and ready to eat.
Beaver dams are never done! They always have to fix holes, add more sticks, or move rocks. If they hear water running, they rush to repair the dam. As soon as one dam is built, they start another. Some beaver families build a row of dams on the same river, along with two or three homes.
Beavers work hard together, using their teeth and tails to build amazing homes. They're like little engineers of the forest!
