The novel A Dream of Red Mansions is like a big picture of the Qing Dynasty manners. On her first day in the Jia family,Lin Daiyu feels nervous. She must greet the elders in the right order: first Grandma, then uncles and aunts. One wrong bow would make everyone embarrassed.

Back then,those manners were not cold,rigid rules. They were quiet ways to care for others:letting elders sit first meant "I respect your years",pouring tea with two hands said "I value our bond",and following seating rules showed "I see your place in this family".
