I was seven when I went to Ireland to spend a week with my grandparents. Grandma welcomed me into their cottage by the sea. It was a strange feeling since I hadn't seen her for a long time.
The following day, I became ill with a cold. I wanted to explore the cliffs, but had to stay in with Grandma. She was knitting(编织).
“Jane, would you like to learn?”
“Yes.”
She gave me a pair of wooden needles and some soft blue-green wool, the colour of all the seas and oceans. Wrapping her arms around me, Grandma taught me the art of that ancient craft. I watched her move. Her piece was full of beautiful patterns(图案). They were intricate(复杂精细的).
“How do you know what to do?”
“I have it in here,” she said, pointing to her head. “My mother taught me this pattern. It tells a story of the sea and the people who live near it.”
“The cables are ropes and are wishes of safety for the fishermen off the coasts. These zigzags remind(提醒) me of the cliff paths I hope you’ll walk with me and pick flowers along the way. And then my favourite is the diamond. It tells me to treasure all in this life. With each stitch(一针), more love is added to the sweater, and the knitter always knows for whom she is knitting.” I loved the way I connected stitches together, one at a time, just like what Grandma said.
All too soon, it was time to go. I wore my sweater Grandma made for me, and I gave her the scarf that I had worked so hard on. It showed how I felt about Grandma.
I never saw her again. But she is with me often, not only because I wear the sweater Grandma made for me but also because I continue the tradition of knitting that Grandma taught me, especially when I later passed her gift on to my own daughter. We knit in blues and greens, and talk about the colour of the sea in Ireland. One day we hope to see it together.
