The Lantern Festival is an important traditional festival in China. It is also known as Yuanxiao Festival. The festival dates back to(追溯到) the Han Dynasty. It has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month(农历月) and marks the end of the Spring Festival celebrations.
During the festival, many interesting activities are held across the country. The most popular one is watching beautiful lanterns. Streets, parks, and houses are decorated with colourful lanterns in different shapes and sizes. Another fun activity is guessing lantern riddles. It is enjoyable for both children and adults, because the riddles are interesting and a little challenging. In many places, people also watch wonderful dragon and lion dances. What's more, spectacular fireworks light up the night sky, filling people with joy and happiness.
Food plays an important role in the celebration. People usually eat rice balls called tangyuan in southern China or yuanxiao in the north. Although they are made in different ways and have different names, both of them share the same meaning:family reunion. The Lantern Festival is truly a time for family happiness.
