Some animals are helpful to humans. As we know, dogs are man's best friends. Some people keep dogs as pets. Other dogs are trained to help people with special needs and we call them “assistance dogs”. Guide dogs, for example, help the blind get around safely. There are also autism(孤独症) assistance dogs. As the name suggests, the dogs support autistic children.
Today, China has more than ten million autistic patients. Nearly one-fifth of them are children. As they seem to live in their own “world”, they're also known as “children of the stars”. There's no medicine to treat autism. However, studies show that dogs can give them a helping hand.
In 2021, the first school to train autism assistance dogs was set up in Shanghai. At the end of 2023, the first group of three dogs finished their training. The school held a special graduation ceremony(毕业典礼) for them. At the ceremony, they showed their skills on stage.
Families with autistic children aged between three and twelve can apply to have one of these dogs. Many parents have shown an interest in the programme. “It's hard for us to get close to our kids,” said one of them. “With the dogs, I hope that they can feel less lonely.”
