Bananas have been used as food by men for thousands of years. It is said that in the past people in America boiled the bananas, thinking that they had to cook them before they could be eaten.
Bananas grow well in places where the weather is warm and wet. They are produced in large quantities(大量) in tropical(热带的) countries. They cannot be grown in any place where the temperature falls below 12°C. The banana plant needs care in order to produce good fruit. The farmers have to spray(喷洒) the leaves to prevent plant diseases. They also have to remove(清除) the weeds and grass in the areas around the plant.
About ten months after planting, a flower will appear on the banana plant. Then small bananas appear and they grow downwards.
After three months they are ready to harvest. Bananas are harvested while they are still green because they will lose their flavor if they are allowed to ripen(成熟) on the plant.
