二、阅读理解
We should all have at least one fire extinguisher (in our house or school). However, it's not enough to simply keep one somewhere. The best way to be ready for a fire is to study this guide carefully and review it regularly.
Have a clear way out
Before using the fire extinguisher, make sure you have a clear way out. If you cannot put out the fire, you will need to find a safe way out.
Call the fire department
Even if you can control the fire, you should always have the fire department on the way. Once firefighters arrive, they can double-check if the fire has been completely put out.
Stand back
Face the fire and keep your back to the clear exit. You should stay between 1 and 2.5 metres away from the flames as you prepare to use the fire extinguisher.
Use the extinguisher
It can be difficult to think clearly in a fire. One method to help you remember how to operate an extinguisher is to remember "PASS".
• P—Pull: Pull the pin(销) on the fire extinguisher.
• A—Aim: Aim low. Point to the bottom of the fire instead of the flames.
• S—Squeeze: Squeeze the handle(拉手) to release the extinguishing chemicals.
• S—Sweep: Sweep the nozzle(喷嘴) from side to side until the fire is put out.
Keep an eye on things
After the fire appears to be out, continue to watch the fire area to make sure it doesn't start burning again. If the fire does start up again, repeat the "PASS" process.
Get to a safe place
Once the fire is out, or if you are unable to put it out, leave at once. Find a place out of reach of the fire.
