Long long ago, there lived a poor farmer who had a flock of geese(鹅). Every morning his wife led the geese to the pool. Then she came back home and put the eggs that the geese had laid into a basket. And they made some money by selling those eggs at the market.
One day, when the farmer's wife called the geese back to their home in the evening, she saw a very different-looking goose in the flock. "Where did it come from?" she wondered. However, she went to her own room telling nothing to anyone.
The next morning, she led the geese to the pool and took the eggs as usual. To her surprise, there was a shiny golden egg among all the other eggs! She became so excited that she rushed to her husband and told him everything clearly at once. They sold it at a high price at the market. From then on, every morning the couple could get a golden egg and they soon became rich. The farmer and his wife were happy all the time. But one morning, the farmer got an idea and thought, "Why do I take just one egg a day? Why can't I take all of them at once and make a lot of money?"
The farmer's wife also agreed and decided to cut the goose's stomach for the eggs. They killed the goose and opened its stomach, only to find that it was just like every other goose. It didn't have any golden eggs inside it. The farmer, realising his foolish mistake, cried over the lost resource!
