五、阅读理解。
Many people may throw away the pits(果核) inside fruits after eating them, but artists of nut carving(核雕) have turned them into artworks instead.
Weifang Nut Carving started from the Qing Dynasty. During that time, an old artist, Wang Dayan, taught the skill to common people in Shandong Province. Artists back then often used peach pits to show off their skills. In 2008, Weifang Nut Carving became a national intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) because it not only needs excellent carving skills, but also carries traditional culture, and shows rich artistic themes.
“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 cm long, can be made into many things,” said Tan Wanhai, 48, an artist of Weifang Nut Carving. Tan has studied the art of nut carving for 25 years and has created many nut carvings.
However, bringing this kind of artwork to life is not easy. “Each peach pit has its own special texture(质地),” Tan said, adding that artists have to study each peach pit to carefully plan their artwork. Nut carving artists also need to have knowledge in many areas, such as painting skills and calligraphy(书法).
Thanks to their creative designs and fresh ideas, Weifang Nut Carving artworks have been welcomed by people in China. More people are learning the art and more nut carving artists now give up the tradition of passing down the skill only through the family and open it up to anyone who is interested in learning the skill.
