Gary and Karen ran all the way to the Academy. When they arrived, it was already ten minutes past five.
“I'm sorry,” said a woman at the door of the exam room. “You're late and the test has already started.” She looked at her notebook. “You must be Gary,” she said. “Everyone came on time. Why didn't you?”
“Please just give me one chance,” said Gary. “Something happened. Really, it's not my fault.”
“It's true,” said Karen. “You have to believe him. He's telling the truth.” Karen told her the story of the shoplifter.
The woman thought for a moment. “All right,” she said. “But we can't give you any extra time. Take a place and don't disturb(打扰) the others.”
Gary looked at the test papers. He remembered what Laura had told him. Stay calm. Read all the questions carefully first. Decide what questions you are going to answer, and then work out how much time is available(可用的) for each question. Make sure you save ten minutes for checking your answers in the end.
He had ninety minutes. He had to do a Maths paper and an English paper. Allowing(留出) ten minutes for checking papers, he had forty minutes for each paper. He set out to work. He finished the Maths paper in twenty-five minutes. He thought about it. It was too easy. Maybe he had made a mistake. He checked his watch and started to do the English paper. It wasn't easy. He answered all the questions and checked his watch from time to time. He finished the English paper in thirty-five minutes.
Then he read his Maths paper again. He found one mistake. He was glad he had checked it carefully. He checked his English paper. He found two grammar mistakes and three spelling mistakes. He made the corrections. He looked through all his answers one more time. He was satisfied. He took a deep breath and put down his pen. He checked his watch. He had finished fifteen minutes before the end of the test.
When he gave his test papers to the woman, she said, “Are you sure you've finished?”
Gary nodded. “I did my best,” he said.
