We all know that Mr Bean is a silly man, but his inventor is a very clever man. Mr Bean is famous for being clumsy (笨拙的) and not good at practical things. He is always getting into trouble. It's surprising that his inventor can write about these things because, unlike his invention, he has a degree in Engineering and was awarded a master's degree in Electrical Engineering at Oxford University—one of the best universities in the world!
Mr Bean's inventor is Rowan Atkinson. In fact, he plays the role of Mr Bean himself. Rowan Atkinson was born in 1955 in the northeast of England and studied Engineering at Newcastle University before going to Oxford. While he was at Oxford University, Rowan Atkinson started writing and performing comedy sketches (短剧). He developed the idea for Mr Bean in the 1970s, but he did not decide on a name for the character until much later. Before he came up with the name Mr Bean, he even tried other funny names such as Mr Cauliflower (花菜)!
Mr Bean was first shown on TV in 1990 and was a huge success. It has won many awards and made Rowan Atkinson famous all over the world. It has also been made into a cartoon series and several feature films. In 2012, Rowan Atkinson, together with an orchestra, attended the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, creating a timeless moment of music and comedy.
