D
I'm Dave. When I was little, I was really little. But I dreamt of being a basketball player. I tried out for school teams but never got a chance.
As I grew older, I didn't get much bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try running and told Grandpa,“I'm going to be an athlete.” He said gently,“If you can't be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th, I did it again and added an extra mile. This went on—14 miles at 14,15 at 15,16 at 16,17 at 17.
Later, I dreamt of running the Boston Marathon. Grandpa asked if I was ready. But he still promised to cheer me on. I ran fast that day but fell at Mile 18 and was sent to the hospital. I told Grandpa I failed, but he said,“You didn't fail. You discovered big dreams take hard work.”
I trained daily, but two months later Grandpa died. I decided to run for him. On race day, his words pushed me. When I crossed the finish line,I cried,“Grandpa,we did it!”
